Doupé building back up for sale: Had been undergoing major renovations

ILWACO — A peninsula building steeped in history is back on the market, after the current owner said their attempts to transform the dilapidated property into new housing had become too costly. Located at the intersection of Spruce Street and First Avenue, the Doupé building in Ilwaco has been for sale since August, after Abigail Mack made what she called a “difficult decision” to sell after pouring more than $1 million into renovating the property over the past seven years. “This journey has been full of both challenges and rewards, but the time has come for me to focus on other projects and, most importantly, my family,” Mack said in a post on the Doupé building’s Facebook page last month.

1896 landmark coming back to life: Much work still ahead in ambitious Doupé Building restoration

Over the past six years owner Abigail Mack has led an ambitious total renovation of the roughly 20,000 square-foot building. It originally was home to the Aberdeen Packing Company — a pioneer salmon-packing firm — and then a general merchandise store owned by the Doupé family, but has been unoccupied since the death in 2009 of longtime Ilwaco businessman Chuck McNeill. Mack intends to fully restore the space to productive use, including upstairs apartments and a downstairs commercial space. She plays an active, hands-on role in all phases of the project.

Doupé building approved for first floor apartments

ILWACO — Let the renaissance begin! That was the mood at the Ilwaco City Council meeting Monday night. Members unanimously approved a conditional-use permit for Abigail Mack, an investor from Ohio, to renovate the long-vacant Doupé Building at the center of downtown. The permit is needed because the building at 102 First Street is zoned for commercial use, which does not automatically allow residential units on the street level. Mack plans to renovate the building with five apartments downstairs and nine on the second level. Half the lower level of the former Aberdeen Packing Co. landmark will remain commercial.
